Our Programs

Three core areas of emphasis, supported by targeted academic programs designed to build skills, confidence, and opportunity at every grade level.

Core Areas

Where We Focus Our Energy

1. Educational Development & Innovation

Shall encompass all academic and scholarly attempts or efforts to tool youth and adults relative to future preparation through further education and/or job/career preparation. This shall be broad enough as to offer, extend and compete for scholarships, honorariums, fellowships, stipends, and the like — all with advancement of youth & adults and their scholarly pursuits in focus for students and nontraditional disciplines and occupations.

2. Leadership & Entrepreneurship

Shall encompass opportunities for youths & adults to advance and learn about the many types of leaders and leadership skills, thus providing the necessary incentives to advance such skills. This may take the form of Leadership Institutes, Training/Job Seminars, Apprentices, Academic Shadowing, Job Shadowing, Retreats, and similar activities.

3. Health & Wellness

Shall encompass any efforts to promote better health, wellness, and safety of youth, adults, and elders in the communities we serve. These efforts may include opportunities to advance wellness, exercise, health promotion, disease prevention, chronic health awareness, safety issues, bullying prevention, teen sexual health, and the ills brought about by drug use, misuse, and other public health issues.

Academic Programs

Building Skills at Every Age

Go-To-High School/Go-To-College Signature Program Impetus

The “Go-to-High-School, Go-to-College” program, established in 1922, concentrates on the importance of completing secondary and collegiate education as a road to advancement. Statistics prove the value of this extra impetus in making a difference in the success of young African American men, given that school completion is the single best predictor of future economic success. Through the Go-to-High-School, Go-to-College educational initiative, young men receive information and learn strategies that facilitate success. Alpha men provide youth participants with excellent role models to emulate.

We meet this mandate through our three academies: Alpha Rise Academy, Alpha Leadership Program for Higher Achievement, and the Alpha Millennium Academy.

Special Initiatives

Targeted Programs With Purpose

Collaborative initiatives that complement our academic programs by focusing on fatherhood responsibility, healthy decision-making, and college readiness.

Responsibility · Fatherhood · Ages 12–15

Project Alpha

Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and the March of Dimes Birth Defects Foundation began collaboratively implementing Project Alpha in 1980. This collaborative project is designed to provide education, motivation and skill-building on issues of responsibility, fatherhood, relationships, teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases for young males ages 12–15 years. Designed to provide young men with current and accurate information about teen pregnancy prevention and the responsibilities of fatherhood, Project Alpha consists of a series of workshops and informational sessions conducted by Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity brothers.

The three goals of Project Alpha programs are:

  • Sharing Knowledge by combating ignorance and fear with factual information.
  • Changing Attitudes by providing motivation toward positive changes in sexual behavior and an embrace of fatherhood responsibility.
  • Providing Skills by creating a sense of empowerment and self-esteem.
College Readiness · Mentorship

Go-To-High School / Go-To-College Panel Discussion

Designed to engage our college brothers from the Beta Nu and Iota Delta Chapters to share and enrich the lives of our program participants about the college experience, how to prepare, and keys to success. Panelists offer real-world perspective on academics, campus life, and the habits that lead to thriving in higher education.

Parent Partnership · Family Engagement

Alpha Parent Ambassador Institute (APAI)

The Alpha Parent Ambassador Institute initiative is our newest educational and leadership program focused on establishing a close partnership with the parents of the students involved in all of our leader-scholar educational and leadership programs. We feel to “Build a Village”, we must include all the elders that impact the development of our children. Parents are the first teachers, and their homes represent the first classrooms. We have endeavored to harness this most powerful resource by providing parents with support as well as a platform and forum for ideas, exploration of strategies, resources, and new knowledge that affirms or enhances their parental efforts to provide the best for their sons. We may accomplish these efforts through workshops, professional speakers, current research, and other opportunities to enhance parenting strategies to deal with emerging adults in their homes, and conflict in the family. These will be scheduled with your busy schedules in mind.

Safety · Law Enforcement · Youth Advocacy

N.O.B.L.E. Partnership

We maintain a long-standing partnership with the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE) to help our youth live safe and secure lives and learn how to effectively deal with law enforcement. NOBLE operates four core program components that shape its advocacy, training, and community initiatives: Mentoring, Education, Leadership Development, and Safety. These efforts are designed to ensure equity in public service and promote diversity within law enforcement leadership.

STEM Outreach · University Partnership · K–12

Florida A&M University (FAMU) S.T.E.M Day

Florida A&M University's (FAMU) STEM Day is an annual, hands-on outreach event designed to spark interest in science, technology, engineering, and math. Its primary goal is to inspire K-12 students to pursue STEM careers and build a diverse, future-ready workforce. We engage our students in all three of our programs to inspire future innovators and scientists, build career pathways, showcase the University's excellence, and engage our students within the context of the larger university community.

Online Safety · Cyber Resilience · Youth & Parents

Leon County Sheriff & Homeland Security Partnership

In partnership with the Leon County Sheriff's Department and Homeland Security, we educate youth and parents on keeping young people safe online. For youth: stop and think before clicking, protect personal data, recognize phishing attempts, and report or block suspicious contact while alerting a trusted adult. For parents: leverage built-in parental controls, secure home Wi-Fi networks, enforce screen time limits, and practice privacy-first posting on social media.

Public Speaking · Communication · Leadership

Annual Oratorical Contest

Every student is required to participate in our Annual Oratorical Contest. We believe learning to speak publicly and communicate using highly effective techniques and strategies is essential for any leader. Leadership requires people to effectively communicate and speak with confidence in public. Improving public speaking skills helps students sell themselves better, present themselves professionally, inspire others, boost career opportunities, and reduce the risk of violence, victimization, rejection, and bullying. One of the risk factors we find among youth—particularly minority males—is not knowing how to effectively communicate due to poor social and communication skills, which can predispose them to peer rejection, bullying, and negative social outcomes. We strive to teach students how to effectively communicate and deliver a written speech with confidence, with a strategic goal to change, persuade, and alter the listener in a positive fashion.

By leveraging the professional and moral leadership of the Gamma Mu Lambda, Beta Nu, and Iota Delta chapters, the project seeks to equip fathers (and father-figures) with the emotional, financial, and educational tools necessary to lead their households effectively and mentor the next generation of young men in Leon County.
