About ALPHA EDUCATIONAL & LEADERSHIP FOUNDATION
A private nonprofit 501(c)(3) charitable organization dedicated to advancing the lives of youth and adults through education and leadership.
Our Mission
AELF (ALPHA EDUCATIONAL & LEADERSHIP FOUNDATION) is a private non-profit 501(c)(3) tax exempt charitable organization founded in June 2004 with the primary purpose of advancing the educational, leadership, entrepreneurial, and health of youth and adults. In doing so, the AELF seeks to optimize, coordinate, train, educate, and provide the necessary leadership, development, and life skills necessary for youth and adults to advance scholastically, socially, and mentally in life and in the broad academic arenas.
Our Vision
AELF (ALPHA EDUCATIONAL & LEADERSHIP FOUNDATION) serves as the primary educational and leadership arm of the Gamma Mu Lambda (ΓΜΛ) Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. located in Tallahassee, Florida. In addition, the AELF shall invest in the greater social, educational and health needs of the community at large and may engage in coordinated efforts with other organizations and entities to fulfill its broad mission.
A Legacy of Leadership and Impact
A Brief History of the Alpha Educational & Leadership Foundation, Inc.
As we proudly prepare to celebrate 41 years of transformative youth education and leadership, alongside 22 years of the formal existence of the Alpha Educational & Leadership Foundation, Inc. (AELF), we honor a vision of community empowerment that has spanned decades. The foundation of our work stands as a testament to strategic foresight, institutional resilience, and an unwavering commitment to the youth and families of the Tallahassee/Leon County community and the nation.
The Genesis of a Vision
The journey to establishing the Foundation was born out of a long-standing goal to create a formal 501(c)(3) organization. The brotherhood recognized that a non-profit foundation was essential to stabilizing our academic and leadership programming under a single, unified entity. By establishing a 501(c)(3), the organization could build a robust infrastructure capable of sustaining long-term community outreach through competitive grant-writing, securing private donations, and forging powerful collaborative partnerships.
This structural evolution began in earnest in 1997. A small committee, chaired by Brother Gregory J. Harris, was charged with drafting the first version of the Articles of Incorporation. After meticulous crafting and subsequent updates in 1998, the draft was presented to the larger Brotherhood of the Gamma Mu Lambda Chapter for rigorous review. In late 1998, the chapter officially voted to proceed toward the formal IRS application process.
When choosing an identity, the committee intentionally selected the name Alpha Educational & Leadership Foundation for its broadness and all-encompassing impact. The founders deliberately rejected a narrow title, ensuring the name would be strongly and positively perceived by outside corporate entities, philanthropic organizations, and government agencies as we sought widespread community support and grants. Through a journey of trial and error, navigating the inevitable ups and downs of the rigorous federal application process, our persistence prevailed, and the Foundation was officially granted its IRS tax-exempt status in June 2004.
The Evolution of Our Academic Academies
While the Foundation was formally incorporated 22 years ago in 2004, our roots in youth advocacy run much deeper. Our flagship, original program actually pre-dated the Foundation: the Alpha Leadership Program for Higher Achievement (A.L.P.H.A.), which was established in 1985 to cultivate academic excellence.
As the needs of our community expanded, so did our educational pipeline. In 1999, Brother Gregory J. Harris established the Alpha Millennium Academy, creating a dedicated space to prepare high school students for higher education and career success. With the high school academy in place, the original Alpha Leadership Program for Higher Achievement was strategically repurposed to focus directly on the vital developmental years of middle school students. To complete this comprehensive, multi-tiered educational pipeline, the Alpha Rise Academy was created in 2022 to nurture elementary school students, alongside the simultaneous launch of the Alpha Parent Ambassadors Initiative to deeply engage and support our student's families.
A Lasting Community Blueprint
From those foundational years to the present day, the Alpha Educational & Leadership Foundation, Inc. has served over 400 youth and their families through our three core program academies. This generational impact has been made possible through the tireless dedication of countless volunteers from the Gamma Mu Lambda (Graduate) Chapter, the Beta Nu (FAMU) Chapter, and the Iota Delta (FSU) Chapter, working hand-in-hand with our parents and diverse community partners.
As we look toward the future, the Alpha Educational & Leadership Foundation, Inc. remains a beacon of hope and excellence, continuing its mission to shape the global leaders of tomorrow right here in our local community and beyond.
